About Us

After the General Board of the Malaya Baptist Convention (later known as Malaysia Baptist Convention) voted to establish a bookstore in Penang in 1953, a Baptist Book Room was opened at 35 Anson Road Baptist Mission House in 1954.  In 1955, Baptist Book Room was officially upgraded to Baptist Book Store at 8C Carnavan Street.  In 1968, the foresight and generosity of the Foreign Mission Board (now known as International Mission Board) led to the purchase of the current shoplot at 300 Burma Road, a prime area in Pulau Tikus, Penang.  BBS moved into the premises on September 1969 after renovations had been completed.  On 1st June 1977, the operation of the Book Store was handed over to the present Malaysia Baptist Convention. Subsequently, the Book Store came under the management of MBC’s Service Board in 1986 with a Local Management Committee of 6 people.

As a non-profit book store, all revenues received from the sales are ploughed back into Book Store ministry.   It exists:

  • to bear witness (especially through the printed word) to non-Christians;
  • to serve Christians and churches by making available essential materials such as Bibles, Christian literatures, Christian audiovisuals, Sunday School Curriculum, cards as well as gifts that are pertinent to Christian growth.

In 2003, a major renovation work was carried out with the intention of promoting BBS as a Christian Family Book Store.  It is our desire to make a visit to our Book Store a wholesome family experience, with a book room upstairs where adults can sit and take time to browse through our books, an audio-visual area downstairs for teenagers to listen to music and a children’s corner.  The Book Store also attracts a fair number of non-Christians who step into the Book Store to grab a card. Some of these non-Christians have been our customers for many years because of the range of cards we carry and, by the grace of God, some of them have come to know the Lord through BBS.

This ministry could not have flourished without the faithfulness of God, the sacrifice of many faithful men and women who had served in the Book Store over the years, as well as the support of churches and Christians.

To these brothers and sisters in Christ and churches, we would like to say a big Thank You! for your generous support and prayers.  To our faithful Heavenly Father, we give our utmost praise and thanks for Your faithfulness and may You continue to guide us and use us for Your glory alone!
